How to Make a Bird House for Wrens

Wrens are easy to attract to your garden bird house as their populations are high in both urban and rural areas. They are also less fussy about locations of nesting boxes than many other species so it is relatively easy to make them a bird box home that they will be comfortable in.

To make a bird box suitable for a wren family make a bird box with a 4″ x 4″ internal floor and a height of between 6″ and 8″. The roof can be a simple piece of wood placed on the top or a slanted roof. There is no need to make perches as they only encourage predators. make a hole in the front of the box of between 1 1/4″ and 1 1/2″ with a drill for the entrance. To stop predators enlarging the hole it is a good idea to fix a flat piece of metal with a hole of the same size over the hole.

Assemble the bird house using wood screws and paint with a non toxic paint. Wrens prefer hanging bird houses or on the side of a building but they will use houses on poles too. if you place the bird house on a stand make sure you prevent predators from climbing up it.

Place some seeds in the bird house and wait for the wrens to find it.
